Racine county criminal cases, by the numbers

The end of the year is always a great time to look back at the past year and take the time to reflect. Each year the Wisconsin Office of Court Operations publishes a variety of reports online relating to the cases that have gone through the Wisconsin court system in the previous year. One of the reports that is interesting to take a look at is the report that summarizes the dispositions of cases by each county. Given that we haven’t concluded 2015 yet, the report available online is from 2014. The 2014 report indicates that in Racine County alone 5,826 cases went through the criminal court system. This number is made up of misdemeanor, felony, and criminal traffic cases only.

Juvenile delinquency cases made up another 406 cases in the court system. Of the 1,734 felony cases concluded last year, 29 were resolved through jury trials, 4 court trials, 284 were dismissed before trial and the remaining 1,368 were resolved through stipulations or plea agreements. In the misdemeanor and criminal traffic courts 8 cases went to jury trial, 1 court trial, and 767 were dismissed before trial. The remaining 3,206 were resolved through stipulations or plea agreements.

So what does this all mean? It goes to show that many people go through the Wisconsin court system each and every year with and without lawyers. The numbers referenced above are only a snapshot of the cases that come through Racine County specifically. What these numbers don’t take into account are the number of people who are sentenced to jail or prison as a result of going through the criminal justice system.

If you a family member or a loved one are facing a Racine county or Wisconsin criminal case, we encourage you to give our office a call so we can help you and your family through this process. We recognize the importance of making sure each and every one of our clients doesn’t just feel like a number or another person getting moved through the court system.
