About Walworth County
Walworth County, Wisconsin is one of the oldest (and wealthiest) counties in the state. Covering an area of 576 square miles of rolling hills, forest, meadows and streams, the county has many lakes, including the largest, Geneva Lake. The Walworth County area was originally the home of the Potawatomi Indians who had settlements on the north shore and west end of Lake Geneva. The first white settler was Christopher Payne, who arrived in 1836 from Pennsylvania. After staking his claim and building a cabin, his land was taken over by surveyors who drove him off, burning his cabin. He returned with 30 armed men, and after an extensive argument, he paid the surveyors $2,000 to leave, and upon regaining control of his land continued to reside there until 1871. In 1836, there were only 27 families living in the county, and to date, the population of Walworth County has grown to about 57,000.
